Kitimat Lodge, BC Canada-Steelhead Fishing report

The past few weeks have produced a variety of catches. Halibut and Salmon are putting smiles on our guests faces. The fellas from Ireland put on a clinic the past few days, with a 43lb Kalum Chinook and many Kitimat Chum, using fly and light tackle with 50lb braid. Saltwater Coho fishing on the Douglas Channel has been hot, hot, hot! Our foursome from Amsterdam and Kamloops had a great day with 16 Coho and a nice feed of Crab. Also attached are the fellas from Morgan Heavy Lift. The fellas from Morgan are in town working, they get one day off each week and as you can see in the pic we had a fun day: lots of fish, a few cold beers at days end, and mountain of Kitimat Pizzarama Pizza. These fellas not only move heavy equipment, they also lift into heavy Skeena Chinooks! The Skeena is in perfect condition, as the last week of Chinook retention is closing upon us fast. Also attached is a great Chinook taken by the young Electrician, Mathias, from Red Deer, Alberta, who spent the day with his family, celebrating his parents 25th Wedding Anniversary. Last but not least are the boys from Contech with their 80lb and 60lb halibuts. Arriving guests are from Italy, Alberta, and Germany.

This week at the Kitimat Lodge things are just getting better and better, attached are Salmon of the sea our latest group of 17 anglers enjoyed. Randy from Texas and his party enjoyed excellent conditions and his two daughters had a blast doing the driftboat and jetboat tours.

The Dungeness crab fishing and Saltwater Halibut are always on the menu and we have just purchased another boat to the fleet offering tours for up to 12 passengers.

The Skeena River is dropping and we will be targeting the return of millions of Salmon and Steelhead very soon. Bookings for summer Steelhead and Autumn Coho/Steelhead are always available as our fly guides are tying all the time and our group of 7 are willing to help with the tight lines!

The boys from Fort Mac are all smiles in this group photo and you can see why as the pictures of fresh Chinooks are posted in this report as well others in our salmon galleries. Water conditions are perfect and fresh Salmon are arriving each tide change. Killer Whales are now migrating into the Douglas Channel chasing the schools of fresh Salmon as they return for the summer spawn. Arriving groups this week are from the USA and Canada, tight lines!

With the spring Steelhead season winding down, I had to send out the latest catches of Steelhead and early Chinook photos. These are a few of the larger Steelhead we guided our clients into while fishing coastal BC. As always a story for each photo. Clients flock to the Kitimat region each year in search of large Steelhead and this season again produced some whoppers. Sinzo who fishes twice a year in the area landed this large male steelhead with his 30ft rod which has no reel to bring it in, just the flexibility and the will of the angler to bring in fish of this caliber.

Another large Steelhead was landed by James from Seattle WA, this huge male bent his spey rod like a twig and when it took his fly we both thought it was the bottom of the river, until it started to head shake and rip line off the reel. When the fish hit the net the hook was gone as the line had snapped, whew. Also included in this pic is another hog landed by Kazunori, fishing a double handed rod with a pink and green fly that fooled this monster in a slow flowing, deep pool.

First time client noew, was landing his big steelhead of the trip when at the shore just before it hit the net the fly flew past my ear and I thought the fish was gone, in a desperate lacrosse move I took a overhand stab at the water and the Steelhead was netted! We hugged like we were long lost relatives, and I am sure felt the same as well. What the hell, a little luck is always welcome.

And another good one, Mike from California and I were in a pool and I had a nice bite while fishing behind him, so I called Mike and asked him to fish the spot I just had the bite. We decided to change the depth he was fishing and the color of the fly and yes in two casts he hooked into a whale with his 7 weight Spey rod, the fish took most of his line and 20 minutes later his shaking hands could relax as I netted his Chinook Salmon, fresh from the sea.

As we take time to clean the boats and re-spool new line on the reels, we will start our Saltwater Salmon, Halibut and Crab tours this weekend as our group from Vancouver arrives for fresh Chinooks.

Has spring finally arrived, I wonder as we get pelted with snow while on the water. The groundhogs are playing games for sure this year. We are now into week 2 of our Steelhead season and the fellas from Japan managed to run straight into a nice run of male Steelhead on the spey rods. It was the first time for these fellas to target Steelhead and the fish ranged from 36-38 inches, so weighing in the high teens, very respectable sizes. River conditions are low at best and water temperatures are still in the high 30s to 40F. Afternoon seemed to be our best success as the odd pool had Steelhead rising to warmer afternoon sun beating on the water. The fellas tied a beautiful assortment of flies and I included a collage of the recipes they used.

Week 3 is upon us and our next groups arriving from the USA are in for a treat as fish numbers have increased in the local streams and warmer weather is predicted for the next while, I hope.

Kitimat Lodge, BC Canada - Steelhead Fishing Report

With March just around the corner, and thank goodness, as we have been blanketed with another 3 feet of the white stuff, 6 feet of snow in eight days is making it tough to move, kinda like the Steelhead. Its cold on the water these days, rod guides are freezing and reels are jammed with ice, still we fish, fish, fish for the beautiful Steelhead. Attached are pictures of the latest catches as well some of the most spectacular winter scenery on the planet.

Snow pack in the mountains is above average and we expect a nice run-off in to the rivers this spring. Steelhead season begins in 3 weeks and Craig and Dave are back again as our first arrivers from the USA. Winter Steelhead are holding in nice numbers and fresh fish are entering the Kitimat and Skeena as water levels cycle up and down.

River temperatures are in the 30's and the Steelhead are rolling on the surface, practically breaking ice chunks with their strong bodies when landing back into the frigid freezer, filled with the nutrients that readies them for the late spring spawn, and the trek back in to the Pacific Ocean for a touch-up and a revitalized attitude for the next return.

Steelhead are without a doubt the number one freshwater game fish!
