The introduction of the new series of "HMX"
fly rods by Fenwick, marks a new standard for fly rod
manufacturers. Finally there is an affordable, superior
high speed graphite fly rod on the market that is priced
affordably. Retailing at under $200, the HMX provides
upper end quality at a mid range price.

The rod is built from 33 million modulus graphite, featuring
Fenwick's Cross Scrim construction. The Cross Scrim construction
weaves the graphite for greater strength and durability.
I had the opportunity to fish one of these rods on a recent
visit to Forest Lake in northern British Columbia. Fishing
a trophy lake at the time, I chose to use a 9 foot, 6 weight
HMX for the pursuit of large rainbows. The light weight rod
proved very powerful and responsive. Its crisp action allowed
for effortless casts, even against a brisk wind. I managed
to land a beautiful rainbow of over five pounds while fishing
this rod, and was very pleased by its performance while playing
the fish.
The HMX comes in 9 models, all of them 2 piece rods ranging
in length from 6'6" to 9'. The line weights of these
rods range from 5 wt. (adequate for most river trout fishing
conditions) to 8wt. (adequate for most steelhead fishing conditions).
Having had the opportunity to fish many high quality rods
such as Sage, Loomis, and Orvis, I do not hesitate to group
this rod amongst some of the better fly fishing rods out on
the market today. With its attractive price tag, it should
become a popular choice for many anglers.
