Now a marine park, Hakai holds many promises for anglers who visit the area. Long noted for its ability to produce record salmon catches of all five species, the area continues to live up to its reputation as a trophy destination. Anglers can witness breathtaking scenery, while they intercept runs of fish converging into this area from the open ocean on their way to coastal spawning streams.

The huge Chinook Salmon that have made this area so famous enter the pass in early June through till the end of August. Anglers fishing this area are able to participate in a "true" westcoast fishing experience, while fishing in protected waters adjacent to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

There are many points of land to fish, all within a close proximity of each other, that have had proven track records of trophy fish. In 1987, Odlum Pt. produced an IGFA world record 85.5 pound Chinook salmon caught on 20 pound test. Throughout the last ten years, both Barney Pt. and the famous "Gap" produced many Chinooks over 70 pounds.

Hakai Pass is also well known for some exceptional Northern Coho salmon fishing lasting till mid-September. Entering the Pass in late July and early August, these powerful sport fish gain up to a pound a week, often reaching weights of over 20 pounds! Fishing for these exciting and acrobatic fish is nothing short of "awesome", as 30 to 40 fish days are reported frequently.

The area has also been recognized for its very consistent Halibut and ground fish fishery. Anglers are able to intercept migrating Halibut on their way to shallower spawning grounds, while resident Ling Cod and Rockfish proliferate the area.

Besides the great fishing and awesome scenery, visitors can enjoy sightings from a multitude of wildlife. Orca, Humpback, Pilot, and Grey whales are known to migrate through the pass, as do playful porpoises.

There are many Lodges in Hakai Pass to choose from, handling all your requirements and needs as you enjoy this truly special fishery. Access to Lodges is typically fly-in only, with flights departing from Vancouver, Seattle, and Port Hardy.
