The famed "Salmon Capital of the World", Campbell Rivers
offers diverse angling opportunities year round. This
region, peppered with islands and channels has been
recognized for years as the Pacific Northwest's premier
angling destination. It is home to many exceptional
lodges and charter operators, and is a tourist destination
whose reputation grew around the pursuits of salmon.
While it is well known for both freshwater and saltwater
fishing, Campbell River has also attracted many vacationers
seeking to capture the scenic beauty of the area, as
well as its ample wildlife sightings. The wildlife is
diverse, offering sightings of seals, sea lions, porpoises,
orcas, and many bald eagles.
All species of salmon are abundant here, with the prime
target being the Chinook salmon. Once over 30 pounds,
these big game fish are called "Tyee". So popular has
the pursuit of these larger salmon been, that the Campbell
River Tyee Club was established in 1924 and continues
to recognize worthy anglers today. Qualification to
this time-honored distinction is based on taking a Tyee
from a defined area, in a rowed boat, on 20 pound test
line or less, with a single-hooked artificial lure,
between July 15th and September 15th, on rods between
6 and 9 feet in length. An entry fee of $5.00 will afford
anyone the opportunity to join the club.
While there is good fishing all year round, the best
times to catch the Tyee salmon, increases from August
forward. Coho salmon are abundant in this area, and
offer great sport. Many anglers vacation yearly to Campbell
River, just for the sole purpose of catching some of
these acrobatic Coho salmon under light tackle conditions.
Easily accessible from many points in British Columbia,
there are many resorts of varying sizes that offer wilderness
settings, and the ability to whisk you away to some
great angling opportunities.
